UTSA tests Giant Voice emergency notification system Aug. 22

(Aug. 20, 2012) — The UTSA Office of Emergency Management will conduct an indoor-outdoor test of the Giant Voice emergency notification system between 3 and 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the UTSA Main Campus. Most buildings on the Main Campus are outfitted with the system, which will announce this test message twice: “Attention, attention, this is a test of the UTSA Giant Voice Emergency Notification System. This is only a test.”

The indoor test will last approximately 35 seconds, and no evacuations will be necessary. UTSA floor captains will be stationed in their respective buildings to assist with the test and answer any questions. UTSA community members and visitors who are outdoors on the Main Campus will hear the same message during this time. However, emergency management officials will conduct additional tests of the outdoor siren towers until 4:30 pm to ensure full functionality.

Recent upgrades to the Giant Voice system include new buildings outfitted with the notification system and a new siren tower in the parking lot adjacent to the Bosque Street (south) parking garage. Giant Voice is tested periodically to be certain it will operate properly in the case of a real emergency.
